Citylights Sunday Box Office Report
This Friday gave audience critically applauded film Citylights. Well this one bagged a good critics ratings. This movie is based on Sean Ellis’ acclaimed Metro Manilla. However, it also unlocks the doors to other movies in your mind, making it both a strength and weakness for this remarkable film.
- Cast: Rajkumar Rao, Patraleka, Manav kaul
- Director: Hansal Mehta
- Genre: Drama
- Duration: 127 Minutes
Deepak Singh (Rajkumar) losee his only shop in the village to debt and along with his wife (Patraleka) and child Mahi migrates to city for a new life, ostensibly provided by his friend Omakr. On reaching here however he never finds any person named Omakr but tricksters, criminals, armored guards and bar-girls and moreover a devious plot.
Rao has given glowing performances as a man so simple and innocent. Rakhi, is an excellent counterbalance. Alongside, Deepak’s new found mentor Vishnu (Kaul), supervisor at a security firm, crackles like a live wire in a dark night, exuding city slicker smarts, coiled tension, and sudden warmth. The movie was released in more than 2100 theatres all over India.
The cinematography is wonderful too. The family’s migration stays with you as a vivid new experience- but its city sojourn occasionally reminds you of familiar moments.
The second half gently meanders, shots becoming slightly repetitive and slow, making you agree when Vishnu says Deepak in an exasperated humour, “Aap itni dheemi gati ke film hain!”. However, the end gathers itself, providing a twist that both dazzles and covers darkness.
Citylights Third Day Box Office Collection
Being a low budget entertainer, not much of promotions could be seen from it. A slow opening was witnessed on the first day of screening and an occupancy of about 35%.
First Day Collection: 70 Lacs; First day could not gather much of a public response. A cold crowd was seen in the theatres. I still wonder, how could such a nice script have a low opening?
Second Day Collection: 1.32 Crores; A little bit of improvement was seen in the earnings post second day. Audience seemed to be satisfied with the story.
Third Day Collection: 1.55 Crores; Now with the reports, the total first weekend collection nearly 3.75 Crores.
We hope the story of an impoverished Deepak fights the bad Citylights and comes up with a good total earnings.
